Glucosamine is an amino sugar which is a natural compound that is found in healthy cartilage. Hyaline cartilage or articular cartilage encapsulates our bone ends providing a smooth frictionless surface. Glucosamine is a normal constituent of glycoaminoglycans (GAG), which makes up connective tissue and when combined with a protein it creates proteoglycans. These molecules have the ability to retain moisture and in effect supply the cushioning for our joints.
Double-blind studies have shown Glucosamine to relieve pain and inflammation in joints by helping the body repair the damaged joint. The repair process can take several months so pain relief comes slower than traditional alternatives, however, studies have shown Glucosamine to be superior in relieving pain with no side effects. Sodium-free for those who suffer from hypertension, or those on sodium restricted diets.
The hydrochloride form of glucosamine contains less salt than glucosamine sulphate form. This means a person may take a smaller volume of glucosamine hydrochloride and still achieve an equal amount of glucosamine.
